LECTURE SERIES: 'HANDEL IN DUBLIN'
April is, very much, Handel month in Dublin. The anniversary of the première of Messiah premiere (13 April) on Fishamble Street, beside Christ Church, is marked annually by the Irish Baroque Orchestra’s HandelFest at Dublin Castle. To frame this, a series of free lunchtime lectures will take place on Thursdays 9, 16, 23 and 30 April at 1.10pm, upstairs in the chapter house of nearby Christ Church Cathedral on the subject of ‘Handel and Dublin’.
Delivered by four leading researchers, these include Triona O'Hanlon (9 April), who gained her doctorate on key links between charitable bodies and music-making. Adrian Le Harivel (16 April) will remind attendees of the nine months Handel spent in the city, including two concert series of oratorios. Stuart Kinsella (23 April) underlines the important role of the vicars choral and choristers from both cathedrals,l and Michael Lee (30 April), editor of the Journal of the Society for Musicology, offers a lecture on the wider context of the music of Irish and Italian composers in eighteenth-century Dublin.
